Case Study 2 ‘Traffic Jam’ - Midlands

CM Lane Logistics came to us with an interesting traffic problem. They were to be notified about future arrivals of stock and also informed about anticipated despatch dates. The incoming delivery information would also contain the name and address of the customer together with appropriate invoicing addresses. Compounding the difficulty was the need to separate the goods into two warehouses.

We used our core warehouse management system to handle ‘putaway’ and issue procedures but added an ‘Incoming’ file processing module to handle the receiving notifications . A ‘Diary’ routine, identifying different suppliers, allowed the Users to control the shipments and provide a visual element to the stages’ traffic. At picking time the system crucially allows for the user to select a ‘default’ fulfilment choice from the warehouse based on First In, First Out procedures or a manual override which mops up (out of FIFO) any used and isolated pallets. A Proof of Delivery section completes the suite of modules.

The merit of the solution lies in our experience with other warehouse customers. We often find solutions to problems encountered in a particular area whilst carrying out development work at other sites – this valuable information is called ‘The Knowledge Base’ in today’s jargon - plain old Professional Experience in everyone else’s!

We used our collaborative experience in Toulouse to help solve Northampton based CM Lane Logistics’ problem!

*The file processing was based on an EDI format we had earlier developed with Motorola in Toulouse for our AEI site at Charles de Gaulle airport
